Skill Assessment

The Importance of a Positive Skills Assessment for Skilled Migration to Australia

If you are considering skilled migration to Australia, obtaining a positive skills assessment is an essential requirement under the general skilled migration and employer sponsor visa programs. The assessment evaluates an applicant’s qualifications and/or employment against the suitability of a nominated occupation.

There are various visas that require applicants to provide a positive skills assessment, including the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa, Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190), Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, and more. Each visa has its own set of requirements and eligibility criteria, and a positive skills assessment is mandatory for all of them.

Different assessing bodies are responsible for evaluating the suitability of different occupations. For example, if an applicant wants to get a skills assessment for an Accounting degree, either CPA, CA or IPA can provide this assessment. In some cases, work experience is mandatory upon completion of the degree or qualification, while for others, it may not be compulsory.

Obtaining a positive skills assessment is the responsibility of the applicant. Each assessing body has its own assessment process, procedures, criteria, timeframes, and charges. The process can be complicated, especially for first-time applicants.
